Sunshine and warmer temperatures make summertime in Pure Michigan the perfect time to sample our crisp, cool craft beers. Fortunately, when you Go Great Lakes Bay, there are plenty of fun, fresh ways for you to switch things up in the craft beer scene this season.
Ashley Anderson had heard positive things about PedalPub trolleys, but when she saw one in Grand Rapids, she thought, "Wow, I've got to have this!" So Anderson did her research and decided to purchase a bike from PedalPub, whose bikes are made in the Netherlands, and bring the experience to the beautiful waterfront community of Bay City. "I love that the bikes are still handcrafted and that the original bike [built in 1996] is still in operation," Anderson says.
Your Sunrise Pedal Trolley tour of Bay City can include up to 15 people, 8 of whom power the trolley by pedaling while they ride. While there's no DWP (Drinking While Pedaling), you can quench your thirst and try different craft beers at each and every stop along the way.
When you're ready to get your bike on, Sunrise Pedal Trolley offers 2- and 4-hour themed rides for each day of the week. The Thirsty Thursday tour, for example, is essentially a pub-crawl on wheels, with visits to 3-4 local watering holes during a 2-hour tour.
In addition to weekly themed tours, Sunrise Pedal Trolley also encourages people to get creative with custom tours, like their featured Craft Beer Tour. Anderson also works with groups to design unique tours to suit their fancy-even taking fitness buffs around town on a pedaling boot camp!
"It's so much fun," says Anderson. "It's social, you're outside with fresh air, it's environmentally correct, and people are happy!"
A 2-hour tour costs just $20 per person (8 person minimum) and Anderson recommends you book your book your Sunrise Pedal Trolley excursion a few weeks in advance, though last minute tours are possible depending on availability.
If you like the idea of a craft beer tour, but prefer the idea of being chauffeured around in a luxury bus, look no further than Frankenmuth's Mid-Michigan Beer Tours.

The newest addition to the Go Great Lakes Bay beer scene is Tapped: Midland's Craft Beer Festival, set to fill Downtown Midland with all things hoppy, malty, and good on Saturday, June 20, 2015. This first-ever festival promises to bring together the best of both worlds - proudly brewed-in-Michigan craft beer and handcrafted goods.
It all comes together when the Makers Market opens at 11:00 a.m. on June 20th. But don't go expecting a run-of-the-mill craft show. "We're focusing on vendors who embrace the arts and the craftsmanship of people doing their own welding and artwork," says Selina Tisdale, Community Affairs Director, City of Midland. Expect unique pieces like metal sculptures and yard art at the Makers Market, which kicks off the festival and stays open until 4:00 p.m.
At 1:30, things really get hopping when live bands take the stage. The Slick Jimmy Band will rock out to 80's music from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., followed by Midland's own classic-rock cover band, Loose Change, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. (Did we mention admission to the live music stage and Makers Market is free?)
After you hit the Maker's Market, mosey on over to the Craft Beer Tent for - you guessed it - Michigan craft beer! Open from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., this tasting tent will feature all sorts of brews-pale ales, porters, lager, red ales, stouts and more. Michigan is chock-full of great craft brewers and, at Tapped, you'll be able to sample some of Pure Michigan's best, including Bell's, Tri-City Brewing, Midland Brewing Co., Dark Horse, Right Brain, Arcadia, and more (full list here).
When the Craft Beer Tent closes down, the city-wide Tap Takeovers begin! That's right: for one night, brewers will take over the taps at several establishments in Downtown Midland, featuring beers of their choosing and food pairings to cap off your evening. No tickets are necessary - just head to downtown Midland and let the craft beer celebration keep on flowing.
Admission tickets to Tapped's Craft Beer Tent are $20 per person and are limited in quantity, so order your tickets online now! Your admission includes 6 beer sampling tickets and a commemorative tasting glass. You'll be able to purchase additional sample tickets on the day of the event ($5 for 3 tickets).
When you prep to take on any of summer's hottest new craft beer experiences, be sure to choose one of our regional hotels, where you can rest your head after a long day of sampling some of Michigan's best brews.
