R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots): A Metatheatrical Musical Melodrama

Directed by Tommy Wedge

In October, Saginaw Valley State University will stage an innovative adaptation of R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) by Karel Čapek. This 1920s classic follows Rossum, a scientist who unlocks the secret to creating life-like, thinking machines and mass-produces them in his factory. When another scientist enhances the robots with human-like qualities, the machines rebel, leading to humanity’s downfall. This thought-provoking tale raises questions about ethics, labor, and technology—topics that resonate deeply in today’s world of AI and automation. SVSU’s production is being reimagined as a contemporary musical directed by Tommy Wedge. This original production integrates AI tools, allowing the audience to witness the adaptation process. Text prompts displayed above the stage will modernize and transform the original play into a dynamic musical performance.
