“A Passion for Peonies” is an ongoing photographic project inspired by Saginaw’s rich floral history and the timeless beauty of the peony, the city’s official flower. Sparked by a presentation from local historian Tom Trombley during the 2024 Saginaw Arts “Art and Garden Festival,” Anita McKeith set out to document peonies throughout the community, searching neighborhoods, gardens, and historic homes for blooms connected to Saginaw’s past. Many of the images were ultimately discovered and created in her own backyard, proving beauty can often be found close to home. Through a blend of black-and-white and vibrant color photography, McKeith captures the peony’s many personalities, from soft elegance and grace to bold, dramatic beauty. Using natural light, macro photography, and artistic composition, she transforms ordinary garden flowers into intimate works of fine art that celebrate memory, history, and community pride.
The exhibition will be on display now through July 1st at the Andersen Enrichment Center, located across from Ojibway Island in Saginaw. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
