Travelogue and Adventure Film Series - Indonesia: The Country Spread Across 17,000 Islands

Details

Our 34th Season Travelogue & Adventure Cinema Series continues in 2026-27.

On the morning of August 27th, 1883, the loudest sound ever recorded in human history erupted from a small volcanic island between Java and Sumatra.

Krakatoa's eruption was heard nearly 5,000 kilometers away — windows rattled on the coast of South Africa, the ash darkened the sky for three days, and the average global temperature dropped by more than a degree. What grew out of that catastrophe, in the decades that followed, would become one of the most fragmented countries on Earth: 17,508 islands, 130 active volcanoes, 700 languages, three time zones, 280 million people, the fourth most populous country on the planet, and the last refuge of the Komodo dragon, the Javan rhinoceros, and three separate species of orangutan. Welcome to Indonesia - a paradise of breathtaking islands, lush rainforests and stunning natural wonders; from the beaches of Bali to mystic temples of Java, and so much more.
